Brittany, a handful of years in front of the camera, and a long stretch out of the public eye.
Cathy Ménard was born on June 17, 1954, in Saint-Brieuc, in the Côtes-d'Armor department of Brittany, France. Public records give the date and the place; the sources do not describe her childhood, and nothing beyond those two facts is documented.
By the time she entered adult film she was in her mid twenties and, according to the memoir of Richard Lemieuvre (Richard Allan), working at a lawyer's office.
French reference writing places her first shoots in 1980, for Michel Barny («Au Caprice des Dames») and for Michel Baudricourt, who also worked under the name Michel Caputo. IAFD, the industry database that carries her records, starts her active years at 1981. The two accounts describe the same break, a year apart.
Her first major role came for Gérard Kikoïne, in «Bourgeoise… et pute», where she played Muriel and was credited as Sylvia Cyranno. Kikoïne cast her in four films. The film is dated 1981 by French reference writing and 1982 by the standard listings, and both years appear in print.
She worked for most of the French production houses of the period, principally Alpha France and Video Marc Dorcel, with Italian and German productions also recorded in her credits. Her scene partners include Alban Ceray, Dominique Aveline, Gabriel Pontello, Jean-Pierre Armand and Marianne Aubert, and scene listings pair her with Richard Allan on «L'initiation d'une femme mariée».
The opening of «Dans la chaleur de Saint-Tropez» (Kikoïne, 1982) belongs to her. The story attached to it: the crew moved on to another location and left her in the set pit for a few hours, in full sun. She was also a regular presence in the Supersex photo-novels, among the period's most widely circulated adult publications.
Her films carry several names. Kathy Menard appears on «Les Culottes de Charlotte» (1982), Sylvia Cyranno on «Bourgeoise… et pute», and Danielle Guegard on two 1983 José Bénazéraf productions. Indexes also record Cathy Maynard, Catherine Meynard, Catherine Menard (used for Supersex magazine) and Dany Ego as billing variants, and sometimes just Cathy.
English-language databases usually write the name without the accent, Cathy Menard; the French form is Cathy Ménard. Both refer to the same performer, and this site uses the French spelling throughout.
Her main run ended in 1985, though two last new titles appeared in 1987. Magazine shoots continued into 1988, with appearances in Week-end Sex 14 and Frivol 137. The 1990 release «Backdoor to Paris» is an archive-footage montage, not new work. The French industry moved from 35 mm cinema theatres to video during the years that followed; her own run had already ended by then.
Cathy Ménard died on May 1, 2022, at Levallois-Perret in the Hauts-de-Seine, aged 67. The date is recorded in the French national death file and carried by the industry databases. A 2024 retrospective, «Cathy Ménard (1954-2022)», returned to her films and to how audiences of the era remembered them.
